Desert blues has become a hot genre, with music from Majid Bekkas and others generating interest through the gentle grooves and its obvious similarities with the blues in general.

The Touareg band Kel Assouf are turning into one of the hardest-working bands, with  a long string of European concerts behind them. Like many of the bands in the genre, it’s hard to exactly define the sound. But Kel Assouf has strong Malian roots. Fans of Ali Farka Toure will recognise them, although the vibe is more gentle.

March 2012 saw them appear in a major concert in Paris to coincide with the French release of the album “Tin Hanane”. No doubt they will be touring often during the coming summer.

Gallo, a highly-rated bassist and percussionist, released “Dida” and “Lowlin” on the IglooMondo label. More details are available  on the IglooMondo site. Click through for the Polish tour dates.

Amkoullel

Invited by various universities and students organisations committed to education and social change through Hip Hop, AMKOULLEL will be doing workshops, panels and performances with his multi-instrumentalist musician playing Ngoni and Talking Drums. He will also play in various NY and LA clubs… the buzz is growing fast!!

Amkoullel is recognised as the most talented and socially committed Malian rapper, combining traditional and contemporary global cultures to promote social responsibility. With his unique charisma and style, he touches all audiences and is boosting the image of Africa through education and culture. Amkoullel is a cultural entrepreneur, a successful TV presenter, a producer and actor as well. In 2009, Amkoullel was honoured at the Mali Hip-Hop Awards three times. In 2010 he released his 4th album Ne Ka Mali!!with 4 amazing videos. 2011 started with the Festival in the Desert and will definitely be the year of Amkoullel’s international launch.

In 1999, Ojos de Brujo recorded its first album, ‘Vengue’ (a gypsy word for the energy that flows through life). It was a homemade production that captured the attention of critics and the public alike, and news of the band’s performances spread rapidly. ”Barí’ (”joy” or “virtual essence” in Caló) was the band’s next step. Now, without industry pressure, they were free to take a new direction. They presented ‘Barí’ to enthusiastic fans across the globe between 2002 and 2005, through several tours in Latin America and the U.S., playing in the most important jazz, rock, and world music festivals such as Glastonbury, Rosklide, Summerstage NY Central Park, Lowlands, Montreal Jazz… Japan, Colombia, Morocco, Cuba, Mexico, Hungary, France, and Germany.

As part of the first Palestinian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale a series of performances and symposia will take place including a performance by Khalil Rabah and the Ramallah Syndrome Sound-System performance on the opening reception.  These events will include performances by Aswatt (RU collective) and Ruanne Abu-Rahme.

There are also plans for the group to appear again in San Francisco.
