Gnawa star Majid Bekkas to play concerts in Northern Europe
Pioneering Moroccan gnawa star Majid Bekkas will be bringing his jazz trio to northern Europe for a series of dates in March 2016. Bekkas’ use of the word jazz is very personal, as the music owes at least as much to his North African heritage as it does to jazz.
The trio, featuring Manuel Hermia’s evocative basuri (bamboo flute) and Khalid Kouhen’s Indian tabla drums, uses ouds and guembri, tabla and bansuri, sax and clarinet. The title track of the latest album “Al Qantara” covers the golden years of the Arabs in Andalusia, whereas “Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouch” is a throwback to the cultural and commercial exchanges that took place along the Silk Route.
The result of an extended collaboration, the Afro-Oriental Jazz Trio consists of Moroccan percussionist Khalid Kouhen and Belgian flautist and saxophonist Manuel Hermia. “They – like me – are influenced by India and Africa, the East and the West,” says Bekkas. A genuine complicity has developed between the three of us.”
