Three annual awards honour the finest performers in the world music industry. This year, the Label Award winner is Glitterbeat (Germany), the Professional Excellence Award will be presented to Mário Lúcio Sousa (Cape Verde) and the Artist Award goes to fado star Mariza (Portugal).

These guests will each be presented with their awards, and the ceremony will end with a showcase from Mariza on October 26, performing the fado for which she is so well-known.

Fado star Mariza

Since her first album 13 years ago, Mariza has become the greatest living exponent of Portuguese fado, as well as the most forward-thinking and innovative in the style. She has created a unique sound that is equally at home in the tavernas of Lisbon as it is in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. She is respected as much within Portugal as she is within the world music community.

For having brought the style to new levels of international recognition and for reaching new artistic heights within the genre, WOMEX bestowed upon her the WOMEX 2014 Artist Award.

Mariza will perform at the special Award-winner show as part of the Awards Ceremony to close WOMEX for another year. For more about the event, visit WOMEX 204. Or why not visit Mariza’s site?
